Remote Learning for the week 8th to 12th June 2020
Hello Year Five,
We hope that you are all well and not missing school (or your teachers) too much! We hope that you are doing at least some of the work that we are setting for you. Remember that we love to see what you have been up to – school work and otherwise – so please ask your parents to send us pictures of you on Class Dojo.
Here is a breakdown of your work for this week:
Miss Vorster and Mr Rankin’s Maths:
This week, we will be continuing our work on decimals and fractions. Specifically, you will be looking at decimals as fractions, understanding thousandths, rounding decimals and ordering and comparing decimals.
You will find the worksheets and answers on our school website in the Year Five area and the accompanying videos are available on the White Rose Maths website.
The link for the website is: https://whiterosemaths.com/homelearning/year-5/ .
Miss Vorster and Mr Rankin’s Arithmetic:
As for previous weeks, you will find two Twinkl made arithmetic tests on the school website – each with 28 questions. Your child may choose to do a whole test all in one go, or may prefer to answer a set number of questions daily. It is entirely up to you!
Miss Golding’s Maths:
WALT: Represent decimals and tenths and hundredths
WALT: Divide 1 and 2 digit numbers by 10 and 100.
The link for this weeks Maths can be found at
As in previous weeks, our school website has the work sheets and answers for you to go with each video.
Miss Golding’s Arithmetic:
There is one test and the answer sheet for children to work through. This is based on the learning we would have covered in the Spring term
Over the next couple of weeks, we will be looking at the different types of planets. To begin with, we will look at the ‘rocky planets’ more closely.
Start by going to the BBC Bitesize website where you can watch the video, read the notes and complete the quiz. The link is:
Then you can watch the following video, which explains about the layers of Earth.
Once you have done this, we would like you to make a diagram of Earth showing the layers. Please label the layers and add any interesting facts that you have learned about each layer. For example: how thick each layer is, what it is made from etc.
WALT: Design, make and evaluate a homemade rocket
Design a rocket that launches into the air. Think about what you are going to make your rocket out of and how you are going to launch it. You may wish to use the instruction sheet provided or think of your own. Fill in/ copy the planning sheet, including the materials you are going to use. Try to use items that you will already have at home.
WALT: Make and launch my rocket.
Make your rocket and test it out. Think about the following for next week’s topic.
- Did it launch?
- Was it held together well?
- Could it be improved?
You may wish to record/photograph this. This will help you, as you will need to discuss your rocket design for next week’s topic task. Do not throw your rocket away - you will need it for next week also.
