Year 5 Remote Learning Weekly Update for Week 2 – 30.03.2020

We hope that you are all well and have enjoyed the activities that we have set for you so far. Keep an eye on Class Dojo, where your teacher will be adding updates and additional activities. In addition to this, we are now going to add some more activities from Purple Mash and Times Table Rock Stars in the upcoming weeks. You need to ensure you are added on Class Dojo and have your own logins for TT Rock Stars ( https://ttrockstars.com/  )and Purple Mash (www.purplemash.com/exeter-nn18 ) If you do not have your login for these, please email your class teacher or send a message via Class Dojo.

English WALT (We are Learning To):  use an expanded noun phrase.

This week you will find a range of activities that involve the use of an expanded noun phrase. If you would like more information on these, please go to the following link: https://themumeducates.com/what-is-expanded-noun-phrase/  There are two sets of activities, the activities labelled ‘colourful semantics’ are for the children who use this as support in class (they will know who they are).  If you login to Purple Mash, you will see there is a ‘2do’ activity set titled ‘Good or Bad Writing’. Your task is to create a dull piece of writing, then edit it using the skills we have learned so far, throughout Year 5.

Maths

Miss. Golding’s Maths:

WALT (We are Learning To): solve problems involving decimals.

This week we are learning to become confident with decimal numbers. The following website has all your activities for the week set out for each day – https://whiterosemaths.com/homelearning/year-4/ There is a short video clip to support your learning. You can either print the activity or copy the answers neatly into your orange workbook. (You can also get the activities on the school website in the Year Five area).

At the end of the week, you can visit https://uk.ixl.com/math/year-4/what-decimal-number-is-illustrated and play the decimal game once you are feeling more confident. Feel free to screen shot your score and send it to your class teacher via dojos if you wish.

For additional support visit https://www.theschoolrun.com/what-are-decimals where you will find a video and lots of information on this week’s topic.

Arithmetic: For our arithmetic this week, I have set TT Rock Stars challenge: Boys v Girls. Whichever group gets the most correct answers wins. I recommend that you spend 10 minutes a day on this, as we would with arithmetic when we are in school. I will award two effort marks to each child in the winning group.

Miss. Vorster and Mr. Rankin’s Maths

WALT (We are learning to): work confidently with decimals with up to 3 decimal places This week we are learning to become confident with numbers that have up to three decimal places. The following website has all the activities for the week set out for each day – https://whiterosemaths.com/homelearning/year-5/ You will see that there is a short video clip for your child to watch which will support their learning. Then you can either print the activity or get your child to simply copy the answers neatly into their orange workbook. (Note: you can also get the activities on the school website in the Year Five area).

At the end of the week, your child can visit https://uk.ixl.com/math/year-5/convert-decimals-to-fractions-and-mixed-numbers and play the decimal game to test their understanding. Feel free to screen shot their score and send it to your child’s class teacher via Class Dojo if you wish.

Arithmetic: As for last week, you will find two Arithmetic tests on the school website.  In total, there are sixty questions.  Your child may choose to do a whole test all in one go, or may prefer to answer a set number of questions daily.  It is entirely up to you!

Reading We would encourage you to continue reading daily with your child at home.  Perhaps you could share a book and take turns reading? Or encourage your child to read bedtime stories to their younger siblings? In addition, we have put a number of comprehensions on the website which will help your child to apply the skills that we have taught them during the course of the year.

Curriculum As you are aware, we have been learning all about Ancient Egypt.  This week, we have a number of activities for your child to complete at home.  We challenge them to:

  • Make a model pyramid from building blocks – how high can they go? Photograph your child’s achievement and record the number of blocks they used. Then send your photo to your child’s class teacher.
  • Make flatbread and serve it with authentic Egyptian dips or salads. Find out more about the food of ancient Egypt.
  • Use hieroglyphics to write a message to a friend or family member. Can they crack the Egyptian code?

Science   In Science, we have been learning about Forces such as gravity, water and air resistance.  This week, we would have been learning about friction and carrying out experiments to discover how friction affects the movement of an object.

We have found a number of informative videos which explain the concept to your child as well as a number of online games that your child can play – thus ensuring that they learn while also having fun   The links to these are below
