Miss. Vorster and Mr. Rankin’s Maths
WALT (We are learning to): add and subtract decimal numbers
This week we are learning to add and subtract decimal numbers both within and crossing whole numbers. The following website has all the activities for the week set out for each day – https://whiterosemaths.com/homelearning/year-5/ You will see that there is a short video clip for your child to watch which will support their learning. Then you can either print the activity or get your child to simply copy the answers neatly into their orange workbook. (Note: you can also get the activities on the school website in the Year Five area).
At the end of the week, your child can visit
https://www.mathplayground.com/ASB_Hungry_Puppies_Decimals.html and play the Hungry Puppies game to test their understanding. Feel free to screen shot their score and send it to your child’s class teacher via Class Dojo if you wish.
As for previous weeks, you will find two Arithmetic tests on the school website. In total, there are sixty questions. Your child may choose to do a whole test all in one go, or may prefer to answer a set number of questions daily. It is entirely up to you!
Miss. Golding’s Maths
This week we are learning about making a whole, ordering and comparing decimals. The following website has all the activities for the week set out for each day. Friday involves a Maths challenge! https://whiterosemaths.com/homelearning/year-4/
You will see that there is a short video clip for your child to watch which will support their learning. Then you can either print the activity or get your child to simply copy the answers neatly into their orange workbook. The answers can also be found here. (Note: you can also get the activities on the school website in the Year Five area).
Each day you will have a little writing to do based upon a picture. The picture will not change throughout the week, so by Friday you will have written a short story entitled ‘Above the Sky’. Make sure to use the sentence types given. Check out the video tutorials for an explanation of the different sentence types.
Enjoy writing. Be as descriptive as possible. We look forward to reading your stories.
In Science this term, we would have been learning about the Earth and Space. We would have started by learning all about Galileo Galilei – his big ideas, his discoveries and his inventions.
We would therefore like your child to watch the video clips listed below to learn all about Galileo before making an informative fact file all about him. It is up to them how they present this information. They may choose to make a poster or a PowerPoint and effort marks will be awarded for effort and creativity.
Please forward a photo of your child’s completed work to their class teacher.
Our new Topic for the Summer term is called ‘Stargazers’, it involves learning about all things space related. To introduce you to the topic, we are going to be learning about our Solar System. There will be two topic activites to complete weekly. The activities this week are as follows:
Go through the power point and quiz called ‘Topic The Planets activity 1’. Once you have completed this, you are to go on to PurpleMash https://www.purplemash.com/exeter-nn18 and login with your username and password. Complete the ‘2do’ activity ‘The Planets’ answering the following questions:
How many planets are in our Solar System?
What is the order of the planets?
Which planet is the largest?
Which planet is the smallest?
Share an interesting fact about the Solar system
Download the planet fact file cards. Choose at least 3 planets and create a fact file on them. You may use the cards provided in the topic section on our website and the following websites may interest you also.
Send your work to your class teacher via dojo or email (on the school website). You could present your work using word, power point or taking a photo of your written work. Be as adventurous as you like.
Mae among the stars by Roda Ahmed. This book is based on the key person Ashworth class looked at during ‘Black History Week’, it tells the story of young Mae Jemison who was the first African American female to fly to space.
The story is on a power point and there is an audio for each slide. The text is split into 3 sessions. There are 3 sessions to work on throughout the week. At the end of each session is a slide with questions for you to answer based on the section you have just read. Send your answers to your teacher via dojo.
