Week 4

We hope you all enjoyed last week’s activities. The feedback we have received has been really positive, so we have tried to keep a similar mix of online and paper activities. We really do welcome your feedback about what has been working and what hasn’t so please do keep in touch! Don’t forget to watch the videos we upload onto Class Dojo as well as these will really help with your learning.



This week we will be looking at angles.

You will need to watch Miss Morris’ video first (this can be found on Dojo), where she recaps everything you should already know about angles. You can then watch the lessons below and complete the activities. Apart from session one, you won’t need a protractor as you will learn how to calculate angles without one! If you don’t have a protractor, don’t worry just look at the answers for that part and see what you can figure out from this.

In order to be successful Year Six readers, children must be able to read complicated texts accurately and fluently, making sense of what they have read and using all of this to answer comprehension questions. The main way this can be achieved at home is through regular reading. Try and choose books that interest your child and encourage them to think about the meaning of what they have read. There are also a number of games you can play to improve reading skills. Try and have a go at a different one each day.

For reading this week, we would like children to continue with story from Audible that they chose before the holidays (these are all currently free). We recommend White Fang by Jack London but they can choose anything that interests them. Children should listen to around 15-20 minutes each day and then describe the setting in their book. When describing the setting, they should focus on the atmosphere as well as what they can see and hear. This has been set as a 2do on Purple Mash.



In writing, the children need to be able to write for a range of purposes. When doing this, they should use a range of punctuation accurately and for effect. So far, we have learned how to:

This week, we would like children to consolidate all of their previous learning by applying it to a piece of independent writing about anything they choose. For further guidance, take a look at Mr Southwell’s video, which can be found on ClassDojo.

When they are writing, try and encourage them to include as many ‘deepen the moments’ as they can as this will help ensure that their writing meets the Y6 standards.

In school, we do writing each day from 11:40 – 12:45.  Don’t worry if they have forgotten how to use a skill as the links suggested will explain what to do. When your child has written their paragraph for the day, send it over to their teacher so they can give feedback if required. Don’t forget to tell us which skills they have tried to include so we can check they are in there.



We have now covered all of the Y6 grammar objectives in school but it is important you don’t forget anything. Try and keep going over everything we have learned, using:

BBC Bitesize: This is useful if you are struggling with a particular area of grammar or punctuation; it has fun videos and explanations to help you understand.

Grammarsaurus and Grammaroplois: A selection of fun videos, which explain tricky grammar concepts in an interesting and meaningful way.

Trapped-Punctuation: Three punctuation games where you need to punctuated paragraphs and sentences to gain the Key of Freedom to escape from the tower.

Word Types: This site is quite a challenge as you have to spot different types of words, like prepositions and adverbs in action and highlight them.

For their learning this week, children will be revising modal verbs. They should watch this video to remind them and then complete the quiz on PurpleMash.



For spelling this week, we will be focussing on silent letters. You should watch this video before writing out the words in ‘look, cover, write and check.’ There is also a quiz on PurpleMash to test their knowledge; this has been set as a 2do.



In curriculum, the children will be learning all about Mexico. Following on from last week’s work, where children looked at the physical and human features of Mexico, this week we would like them to compare Mexico to England. They will need to research the similarities and differences (remind them to think about physical and human features) and then complete the booklet below. Please don’t worry about printing the booklet out; copying the answers into the exercise book we provided will be fine. When you have finished, please send a photo to your class teacher on Dojo or upload to your portfolio.


Comparing Mexico and England



In science, the children are continuing to look at plants and how they are classified. Now children know how plants are classified (watch this video for a reminder if you are not sure), they need to research some non-native plant species (e.g. Chilean rhubarb) and compare these to native plants, that they looked at last week. They should then find out if these can be classified in the same way. If they can’t, children should think about how these non-native plants could be classified. They can present this in any way they wish. When they have finished, please send a photo to their teacher on ClassDojo.



We know a number of you have been in joining with Joe Wick’s daily workouts. These are a fantastic way to start the day and very much recommended!
